A Wal-mart driver has been charged in a fatal truck accident, killing one man and injuring several others, including comedian Tracy Morgan. The comedian's limo bus was struck by the tractor-trailer at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Police say the truck driver didn't notice the slow-moving traffic ahead, and by the time he realized it and made an attempt to swerve, it was too late. The tractor trailer hit the back of the limo bus, forcing it to rotate and overturn. There were four other vehicles involved in the accident, but none of those occupants sustained injuries.
New reports indicate that the truck driver may have been in violation of federal safety guidelines regarding mandates for sleep and shift length. It is believed that the man had been without sleep for more than 24 consecutive hours before the accident, and it is still unclear if alcohol played any role in the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation into the related safety issues. A Wal-mart spokesperson has announced that the company will take full responsibility if it is determined that the truck caused the accident.
This an unfortunate reminder that even the safest drivers and passengers don't always have control over how they become involved in motor vehicle accidents.
